16’s win pool on day 1

Orlando, Florida – The Pilipa’a 16’s began pool play today in the 43rd Annual AAU National Championship. They started the tournament strong finishing 2-1 on the day and finishing first in their pool and advancing to round two tomorrow afternoon.

They started with a few first-match jitters against TAV of Houston, Texas.  They  took aggressive swings on offense and played very scrappy defense to hang in against the tall Texans, however too many unforced errors and some passing break downs led to a 1-2 (25-23, 22-25, 12-15) loss.

Pilipa’a came charging back in the second match of the day against a big and hard-hitting A5 Mizuno team from Atlanta, Georgia.  Pilipa’a served much better  and kept  A5 “out-of-system” for much of the match.  They also played great defense and chased balls in to the sideline chairs and a into the divider net between courts to take the first game. Passing and hitting errors led to a lopsided loss in the second game, but once again Pilipa’a dug deep and came out strong in the third and deciding game .  It was a tough game, but Pilipa’a prevailed with a 2-1 (25-22, 15-25, 15-13) win.

Pilipa’a made things difficult on themselves at times, but continued to find ways to pull together and take some big swings with the game on the line. The final match of the evening was no exception. Pilipa’s started very strong against Cincinnati Volleyball Academy Elite and cruised to a 25-12 first game win.  The steady play to led to the easy game one win disappeared in game 2 and Cincinnati won easily 25-17.  We talked about being aggressive with our hitting and steady with our serving and passing in the huddle prior to the start of game 3. The girls stuck with the game plan making better passes and attacking Cincinnati’s defense with big swings in the front and back court.

They played with a lot of heart and determination today prompting a lot of positive comments from the parents and coaches of opposing teams in our pool and a line of “high fives” from the TAV parents as our girls came off of the court after their win against A5.

Pilipa’a advances to the second round as the top seed in their next pool and will play MN Select 16-2 at 3pm EST (9am HST) tomorrow.
