Pilipa'a Volleyball

Atlanta 09 – Day 4 (18’s Game Day 1)

The Pilipa’a 18’s opened the 2009 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics at the Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia with a tough draw, facing two of last year’s top 8 teams in the first round in addition to a tall and talented United Blue in their first match.

The 18’s struggled with an unusual number of hitting and service errors in the first game and were never able to settle into the solid ball control  that is the hallmark of Pilipa’a volleyball and dropped the first game 15-25.  Pilipa’a showed some signs of life in the second game and were able to win 18-25.  Pilipa’a were again frustrated by  more unforced errors in the third game and were defeated 15-10.

Pilipa’a looked to regroup in the second match against Tool City of Pennsylvania, however their ball control issues persisted and they lost in two games 22-25, 25-27.

With the chances to contend for a gold medal seemingly slipping away, Pilipa’a dug deep and regained their winning ways in a very exciting three-game match with Florida Sons Volleyball Club (last year’s bronze medal winner).  Pilipa’a started off slow and lost game one 21-25 and were behind in game two before putting together a great run to catch the Sons and ultimately pull out a 30-28 victory.  Pilipa’a started game three with the same intensity that they finished game two and never looked back  leading to a 15-11 game and 2-1 match victory.

Pilipa’a has taken a tougher path than they are used to and their 3rd place finish in their first pool puts them in a Challenge Bracket to fight to stay in the hunt for a gold medal. They’ll play SpaceNeedleVbF Fuze at 10am (EST) with the winner advancing to play Husky 18 Red of Nebraska to advance back into Division 1 (top 32 teams of 52 teams).
