Pilipa’a 17’s head to Gold Medal Round

The Pilipa’a 17’s finished day 3 with a 2-1 record (8-1 for the tournament) and have advanced to the Gold Medal bracket.

Pilipa’a faced Sports Performance 17’s in their first match of the day. Although they did not play at their peak, they performed well enough to earn a 25-21, 25-16 victory over the team from Chicago.

Pilipa’a faced Bay to Bay Nike for the second time in this tournament in their second match of the day.  The Northern California team was ready for a rematch with Pilipa’a after their first round loss.  They came out fired up and won game 1  20-25.  They jumped out to an early lead on Pilipa’a at the beginning of the second game as well and it looked like Pilipa’a may suffer it’s first loss of the tournament. Pilipa’a rallied to come from behind with the help of two  consecutive service aces.  Pilipa’a took game 2 25-23.  With a guaranteed birth in the Gold Medal round (top 8) in their sights, Pilipa’a’s focus and intensity increased.  They dominated Bay to Bay at the net and captured game 3 15-5 and a birth in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Pilipa’a played Vaqueros in the their final match of the night.  Pilipa’a traded points with the strong Puerto Rican team for most of the first game, however errors at the end of game 1 proved costly as they slipped to a 25-19 loss.  The Puerto Rican team controlled the tempo from the beginning of game two and Pilipa’a suffered their first defeat of the tournament with a 25-15 loss in game two.

Pilipa’a will face Caciques de Mayaguez of Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals Wednesday morning at 8am EST. The winner will face the winner of Florida Sons and Calgary Elite West in the semis.
