Pilipa'a 17's win bronze medal at 2009 Junior Olympics

The Pilipa’a 17’s defeated Vaqueros of Puerto Rico this afternoon to take the  bronze medal in the 17’s Club Division of the 2009 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics in Atlanta.

Pilipa’a started the day with an early morning match with Caciques de Mayaguez of Puerto Rico. Pilipa’a struggled in the beginning of game one with numerous errors.  Seven of the first eleven points scored by Caciques came on Pilipa’a errors.  Pilipa’a reduced the number of errors, however Caciques went on to claim game one 23-25.  Pilipa’a regained their form to win game two 25-17.  Game three was a battle to the end with Pilipa’a claiming the game (15-13) and match and a trip to the semis to face Calgary Elite West.

Pilipa’a started the match strong, however they were overcome by the talented team (and eventual winner) from Canada (25-22, 25-15).

The loss dropped Pilipa’a into the Bronze medal game and a rematch with Vaqueros.  Although disappointed by the loss in the semis, Pilipa’a was hungry to avenge their third-round loss to the tough Puerto Rican team.  Pilipa’a played agressive and smart and traded points with Vaqueros for most of the first game until pulling away for a 25-21 win.  Pilipa’a controlled the tempo for most of game two with big kills, blocks and great defense to take the game 25-22 and win the match and bronze medal.

The Pilipa’a 17’s finished the tournament with a 10-2 record and Isaiah Ekau and Keoni Bailado were named to the All-Tournament team.
