Pilipa’a 2-1 at Nationals

Minneapolis, MN – The Pilipa’a 15’s finished their first day of competition at the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship with a 2-1 record.

The girls opened play with a tough 2-1 win over Elevation Volleyball.   Pilipa’a came out firing on all cylinders in game one and overpowered the athletic team from the Ohio Valley Region 25-11. The second game proved more challenging and was a back-and-forth battle with Elevation taking the game 28-26.  Pilipa’a bounced back in the 3rd and finished strong taking the game 15-11 and the match 2-1.

Pilipa’a swept EC Power in their second match of the day 2-0 (25-17, 25-21). Pilipa’a was able to neutralize the huge block of EC Power by taking smart swings and around or off the block. Setter Aulike Kaiawe kept Pilipa’a hitters in rhythm with outside hitters Nani Spaar and Tiani Bello taking big swings on the left side..  Middles Laurie McGrath and Anastasia Tuifua showed that Pilipa’a could put up a big block too and provided a much needed boost at the net.  Pilipa’a cruised to a 25-17 in the first game but needed a big service run from Samara Toomata to come from behind to win the second game.

Pilipa’a’s final match of the night was against Mad Frog Volleyball.  Pilipa’a played well, but a few too many unforced errors against the really tough North Texas team proved to be too much to overcome. Pilipa’a lost their first match of the tournament 1-2 (25-23, 14-25, 11-15).

Pilipa’a will face 6 Pack Volleyball of Iowa at 5pm and Midwest Penguins at 7pm tomorrow.
