Pilipa’a 3-3 after two days in Vegas

Las Vegas, NV – The Pilipa’a 17’s struggled with consistency on day two, however finished the day with a win and are now 3-3 in the 2017 SCVA Las Vegas Classic.

Pilipa’a began the day with Sunshine 17 South Bay.  The team from Southern California kept Pilipa’a out of system for most of the match with tough jump float serves and a solid attack.  Pilipa’a struggled to get its offense going.  Solid blocking and defense by Sunshine and numerous Pilipa’a hitting errors contributed to a 0-2 (18-25- 16-25 l) loss for the 17’s.  Pilipa’a was led by Taina Leao with 5 kills.

Pilipa’a lost their second match of the day to El Paso Wildfire of Texas.  Despite playing better than they did in the first match, numerous unforced errors (hitting and serving) by Pilipa’a led to a 0-2 (17-25, 21-25) loss.  Makalei Watson led Pilipa’a with 5 kills and KamaukaMaiau Sibayton and Taina Leao added 4 kills each.

Pilipa’a came out fired up in their final match of the afternoon when they faced Spark Jasmine of Northern California. Pilipa’a jumped ahead early and never looked back cruising to a 2-0 (25-17, 25-15) win. Improved passing  allowed setters Anela Navor and Makenna Mahuna to connect with Pilipa’a’s hitters who hit for was led by Taina Leao with 5 kills and KaumakaMaiau Sibayton with 4.  Pilipa’a scored from the service line as well with aces from Makenna Mahuna (2) and Keani Akui (1).

Pilipa’a finished the day with a team dinner at the Main Street Buffet and visit to the Freemont Street Experience.

Pilipa’a will play at Noon tomorrow against the winner of Nola of New Orleans and Flyers 17 Rox from North Texas.
