Pilipa’a alumnus named assistant coach at UH Manoa

Ryan TsujiHONOLULU – Ryan Tsuji (former Pilipa’a player and coach) has been promoted to an assistant coaching position for the 2008 season with the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball program, head coach Dave Shoji announced. Tsuji, who has been with the team for the past seven years, including five as a manager, will replace Kari Ambrozich for the season as she takes maternity leave after giving birth to her son, Trey, on July 11.

“By hiring Ryan, we will go through an easy transition because he’s been with the program for seven years,” Shoji said. “He wants to be in coaching and this will be a great opportunity for him.”

Tsuji will be on staff through the 2008 season, with his position expiring in December. Ambrozich will return to help with administrative duties in October and as an active coach in January 2009.

Along with his work with the Rainbow Wahine, Tsuji also helped coach the `Imi `Ike club volleyball team over the past three years, which finished second at the Junior Olympic volleyball festival this summer. Alumnae of `Imi `Ike include current Rainbow Wahine Dani Mafua and Elizabeth Ka`aihue, along with incoming recruit Kanani Herring.

Tsuji graduated from the University of Hawai`i in 2007, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and communication. He is currently working on his master’s degree in public administration and is scheduled for graduation in May 2009.

The Rainbow Wahine start camp with the team’s first practice on Saturday, Aug. 9, in preparation for the season-opener on Friday, Aug. 29, against defending NCAA Champion Penn State in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic.
