Pilipa’a Boys’ 18’s – Competition Day 2 – Update #5

Reno, Nevada – The Pilipa’a Boys faced an uphill battle on  day 2 of the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship after an inconsistent performance led to a 1-2 record on the first day of the tournament.  Pilipa’a began the day needing two “challenge match” wins to  remain in the hunt for a championship. They faced  Bay to Bay QS Blue 18-2 of  Northern California in their first match of the morning.   They came out fired up and defeated Bay to Bay 25-14, 25-14.  Pilipa’a’s renewed energy was on display as they defeated Club Idaho 25-18, 26-24  in their second “challenge match” of the day.  “We played much better. Our serving and passing was much better today than it was yesterday and made a big difference for us,” Coach Ecko Osorio said.  “Our goal for the day is to win 5 matches in a row on the same day.  We’ve never done that before,” Osorio added.

UPDATE as of 3:15pm (HST)

Pilipa’a’s goal of a 5-0 match record for the day was not realized however their level of play is elevating as they progress through the tournament.  They lost a hard-fought battle with PVC 18’s of Northern California 24-26, 25-27 which put them 0-1 to begin pool play this afternoon.  The loss was disappointing for the boys, however coach Ecko was able to refocus them on the next match with #3 seeded Team Rockstar.  Team Rockstar looked impressive in game one earning a decisive 16-25 win, however Pilipa’a was not willing to give up and fired back with their best performance of the tournament thus far, winning games two and three 25-19, 15-10 to defeat the strong  team from Southern California 2-1.

Update as of 5:00pm (HST)

Pilipa’a capped off a successful 2nd day of play with a  BCVC of Southern California 25-13, 25-11.  They finish the day with a 4-1 record (2 challenge match wins) and in a 3-way tie in pool play at 2-1.  Pilipa’a is now 5-3 overall for the tournament.  They are scheduled for a rematch with PVC 18’s of Northern California in a  tie-breaker. Schedule T.B.A.

Reports will be intermittent tomorrow as I will be traveling most of the day to Dallas, Texas with our Pilipa’a Girls’ 16’s to the Girls’ USA Volleyball Junior National Championship.

Go Pilipa’a!
