Pilipa’a Boys – Anaheim Day 2 & 3

Day 2:  The Pilipa’a Boys began the first day of competition at the SCVA Tournament Saturday morning at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California.  A slow start with numerous ball control issues led to a disappointing 1-2 record in pool play.   Pilipa’a shook off early match nerves to keep it close with Balboa Bay of California, however unforced errors led to an 18-25, 22-25 loss.  Inconsistency continued to plague Pilipa’a as they lost their second match to to Bones VBC in a very close three game battle 26-24, 18-25, 15-17.  The boys turned things around in their last match of the day with a quick 25-17, 25-11 victory over Akamai VBC.  The boys, coaches and family members headed out to Irvine Saturday evening to catch the #1 ranked UC-Irvine take on #2 ranked BYU.

Day 3:   The Pilipa’a boys moved to Titan Gym at Cal State Fullerton for the second round of  play.  Pilipa’a was in a 3-team group which changed the format to 3 games for each match.  Pilipa’a started to play up to their potential sweeping Renegades of Northern California 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 and Unity 25-21, 25-15, 25-17.  Pilipa’a improved their level of play in almost all aspects of the game including increasing their team hitting percentage nearly 100 points from .209 to .306.  A big reduction in unforced errors also helped  Pilipa’a improve their match record for the tournament to 3-2.

They will move back to the American Sports Center tomorrow for the final day of play.  We have a few pictures posted on our Pilipa’a Flickr account and will try to post a few more tonight/tomorrow.
