Pilipa’a College Report – Week of 9/7-9/13

The Eastern Washington Eagles team closed out the Outrigger Hotels Tournament with a 1-3 loss (19-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25) to Hawai’i.  The Eagles finished the tournament 0-3 and are now 4-6 for the season.  The ewutournament was the homecoming for  Pilipa’a’s (’15) Ka’iu Ahuna.  In the the match up with tournament host Hawaii, Ahuna had one kill on 4 attempts,  a block assist and huge soloblock on the Wahine’s 6’4? star Nikki Taylor.   Despite the Eagles finishing 0-3 for the tournament, Eagles Head Coach Wade Benson was encouraged by their performance. EWU took games off of #2 ranked Florida and #16 ranked Hawaii. Ahuna had nine kills in the tournament and has tallied 25 for the season.

Eastern will complete non-conference play with its first home match of the season this Thursday, Sept. 17, when Corban visits Reese Court. The match is scheduled to begin at 3pm (HST).

Zoe Leonard (Pilipa’a ’15) and her Dartmouth team returned home to Leede Arena for their home opener in the Dartmouth Tournament with dartmouthmatches against the West Virginia Mountaineers and the University of Connecticut Huskies.  Dartmouth defeated West Virginia 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 31-29). Leonard had a team-high 12 digs, along with 5 assists and a service ace.  The Big Green defeated  UConn Sunday morning 3-1 (25-19, 11-25, 25-22, 25-22) Leonard had match-highs with 20 digs and 3 service aces. Dartmouth heads to Oakland, Michigan where they will face Western Michigan, Eastern Illinois and the host Oakland University Golden Grizzlies next weekend.

 

VB14-Kanakaole

Shae Kanakaole (Pilipa’a ’13), a Junior Outside Hitter and her Whitman whitmanCollege team lost their only match of the week 0-3 (11-25, 20-25, 16-25) to Lewis-Clark State University. Kanakaole leads her team with 52 kills through the first 6 matches of the season.  Whitman will face the University of Puget Sound on Friday and Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.

 

 

toni_beck_195_wvbToni Beck (Pilipa’a ’14), a sophomore opposite and her Briar Cliff Chargers finished 1-1 this week with an 0-3 loss (14-25, 21-25, 14-25) to #12 briarcliffNorthwestern(Iowa) before bouncing back with a 3-0 (25-8, 215-12, 26-24) victory in their match with Dakota State. Beck hit  .435 with a team-high 13 kills to lead her team to victory over the Trojans.  Beck and the Chargers are now 7-3 on the season.

anuheaAnuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Pilipa’a ’14),  a sophomore outside hitter and her Wells Express team went 1-2 this week with losses against Elmira (16-25, 24-26, wellslogo25-16, 14-25) and Ithaca (21-25, 17-25, 19-25) and a sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) of Alfred.   Leite-Ah Yo had 6 kills against Elmira,  a team-high 10 kills against Ithaca and 6 kills in the win over Alfred.  The Wells Express head to Pennsylvania this week for matches against Penn St.-Berks and Penn College.

 

taylorTaylor Alicuben (Pilipa’a ’15), a freshman setter and her Highline Community College Thunderbirds  team are off to an impressive 12-2 start this season.  The Thunderbirds split matches at home this week with a loss to Bellevue (20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 8-25, 8-15) and a victory over Mt. Hood (23-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-16).  No individual stats were available for these matches.

 

 

player_Fuata_AlisonAlison Fuata (Pilipa’a ’15), a freshman outside hitter and her  Minot State Beavers won a match andminot lost a match on Friday in the Upper Iowa tournament.  The win was a wild five-game victory over the South Dakota School of Mines  (18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-25, 17-15) and the loss was to Michigan Technological University (14-25, 18-25, 26-28).  Fuata had 3 kills in each match.

woolsey_harleyHarley Woolsey (Pilipa’a ’15) is a freshman at the University of Hawaii-Hilo . Woolsey  has shown her versatility on the court and  has seen time at defensive specialist and setter this season for the Vulcans. She tallied 2 digs and an assist in a 3-game loss to Cal State Los Angeles and 10 assists and 2 digs in a pair of matches against Felician College.
