Pilipa’a College Update w/o Aug. 30- Sept. 5

Ka’iu Ahuna (Pilipa’a ’15) and her Eastern Washington Eagles finished the week 4-0 and are now 4-3 on the
season. EWU notched 3 wins and claimed the title at the University of New Orleans Invitational. EWU had victories over Providence, La Salle, and University of New Orleans before heading to Southeastern Louisiana where they capped off the week with their 4th consecutive victory. Ahuna played at outside hitter in three of the four matches and racked up 11 kills. Eastern Washington travels to Hawaii this week to play in the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge.
Zoe Leonard (Pilipa’a ’15) and her Dartmouth team opened the 2015 season on the road and the University of San Diego / San Diego State Tournament in San Diego, California. The tournament proved challenging for the Big Green who finished 0-3, however it was a great opportunity for Dartmouth to face top-tier teams TCU, Pacific and #23 ranked University of San Diego with the opportunity to improve. Leonard started all three matches at libero and recorded team high digs in each of their three matches with 9 against TCU, 10 against Pacific, and 13 against University of San Diego. Leonard was named to the USD/SDSU All-Tournament Team. Dartmouth returned to Hanover where they will face University of Connecticut and West Virginia in the Dartmouth Tournament this weekend. West Virginia is coached by Hilo’s Reed Sunahara.

Shae Kanakaole (Pilipa’a ’13), a Junior Outside Hitter for her Whitman College team finished a busy week with a 2-3 record. Kanakaole leads her team with 48 kills through the first 5 matches of the season. Whitman opened with a win in Walla Walla over Walla Walla University before heading to Texas for the Mary Hardin-Baylor tournament. Whitman where they were 1-3. Whitman heads to Lewiston, Idaho this weekend for a match with Lewis-Clark State University on Saturday.

Kanakaole leads attack in Texas
Toni Beck (Pilipa’a ’14), a sophomore opposite and her Briar Cliff Chargers are off to a great start this season with a 6-2 record.
The Chargers played in the Kansas Wesleyan Labor Tournament this weekend and finished with a 3-1 record. Beck had 33 kills over the four matches. Briar Cliff will face #12 Northwestern College this Wednesday.
Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Pilipa’a ’14), a sophomore outside hitter and her Wells Express team is 2-3 after their first week of play. This looks to be a promising season for Leite-
AhYowho was last year’s NEAC Rookie of the Year, a NEAC Second Team All-Conference selection (2014) and a NEAC Scholar-Athlete (2014-15). Leite-AhYo has 21 kills through her first three matches of the season.
Taylor Alicuben (Pilipa’a ’15), a freshman setter and her Highline Community College team have won an impressive 7 games in a row to start the season 7-0. Alicuben has assumed the role of setter on this team and was named to the Highline Tournament “All Tournament” team in their first tournament of the season.
Alison Fuata (Pilipa’a ’15), a freshman outside hitter and her Minot State Beavers opened their 2015 season on the road at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanook Classic.
The Beavers finished the tournament 2-1 with wins over tournament host Alaska-Fairbanks and Saint Joseph’s and a loss to Saint Mary’s. Minot State heads to South Dakota later this week where they will face the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Friday.
Harley Woolsey (Pilipa’a ’15) a Freshman DS/Setter and the University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans will begin their 2015 season this week in the Hilo Naniloa Challenge where they
will face Cal State Los Angeles and Felician College.
