Pilipa’a finishes 2nd in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV – The Pilipa’a 16’s finished 2nd overall in the 100-team field at the 32nd Annual Las Vegas Classic held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Pilipa’a compiled an impressive 9-1 match record and a 19-3 game record in the tournament while racking up a number of lopsided victories.

Pilipa’a began the third and final day of the tournament seeded 5th. They stepped up their game defeating Encore Navy of Northern California 2-0 (25-14, 25-19) to move in to the semi finals where they faced undefeated #1 seed El Paso Top Gun 16-1.  Pilipa’a’s strong offensive performance was too much for the smaller, but  incredibly scrappy Texas team.  The 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) win earned Pilipa’a a spot in the gold bracket championship.

Pilipa’a matched up with #2 Ama Xtreme Stealth for an exciting back-and-forth final.  Pilipa’a was slow starting in game one, but mounted a great comeback to take the first game, before losing games two and three.  Pilipa’a fought hard through the entire match against the tall and talented team from Amarillo, Texas, but in the end came up a couple of points short losing 2-1(25-22, 20-25, 14-16).

“I’m proud of how our girls played throughout the tournament. It was truly a team effort with all of our players making significant contributions to our success. Coming up a bit short will  motivate these outstanding volleyball players to train hard in preparation for upcoming regional and national tournaments,” said Head Coach Chris Leonard.

“Mahalo to Asst. Coach Sean Spaar, Team Rep Kathy Leonard and all of our families and friends in the best and loudest cheering section at the tournament for their incredible support throughout the tournament,” Leonard added.
