Pilipa'a Volleyball

USA Volleyball Junior Nationals – Day 1

Today was the first day of competition for our Pilipa’a 15’s in the 2012 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Downtown Columbus, OH.
The day started with a 6am breakfast at the hotel (fortunately the power was on this morning and breakfast was served).

The girls faced the 16th seeded team in the division, TIV Mizuno Kristee 15-1 in their first match of the day. The girls struggled in the first game with the taller team from Texas. Numerous unforced errors and first game jitters led to a 25-12 loss. Pilipa’a came out looking like a different team in the second game and led for a good part of the game before a late rally by TIV propelled them to a 25-18 victory.

The girls had a goal of striving for improvement in each match. They were paired up with the 15’s Division number one seed KC Power from Kansas City in their second match. Pilipa’a jumped out to an early lead in both games, however KC Power fought back to take the match 25-14, 25-19. Their level of play improved significantly, but they were not satisfied after coming up short in their first two matches of the day.

Pilipa’a’s third and final match of the day turned out to be their best. Pilipa’a controlled the tempo in both games which led to a 25-22, 25-19 victory.

We returned to the hotel after our matches and headed out for a late lunch. Shortly after returning, we lost power at the hotel again, although this time the power outage only lasted a few hours. We’re looking forward to more tournament play tomorrow.

Next up for Pilipa’a is an 8am matchup tomorrow morning against Premier 15 gold followed by Aspire 15N Black.
