USA Volleyball Junior Nationals – Final Day

The 2012 USA Volleyball Junior National tournament came to a close today for the Pilipa’a 15’s. Pilipa’a started the day with a “win to stay in” situation. Their goal was to continue to improve and to win two games to win their flight. They started the day matched up against AP 15 PHD of Austin, Texas. Pilipa’a controlled game 1 and won 25-20. The second game proved to be a bigger challenge. Pilipa’a struggled with unforced errors for much of the game and trailed 19-24 before mounting a comeback to win 27-25.

Pilipa’a advanced to play OP2 15 Smack for their final game of tournament. The girls were focused on finishing 2-0 for the day and ending the tournament with a win. Pilipa’a made quick work of the team from Oklahoma cruising to a 25-16 win. The second game nearly mirrored the second game of their first match of the day. Pilipa’a was down 17-23, but didn’t give up. Pilipa’a went on an 8-0 run to close out the second game and win the match 25-23.

The Pilipa’a 15’s (4-6) started the tournament seeded 48th and finished the tournament ranked 37th. Despite finishing a lower than we hoped for, it was a great learning experience for our girls. They were able to compete with every team the played against and know that they didn’t face a team that they couldn’t beat. Consistency was a challenge at times, however the girls know what they need to work on in the future. We plan to visit the Columbus Zoo/ Aquarium and water park tomorrow and will be returning to Hilo Saturday evening. We’ll post additional pictures tomorrow, but this will probably be the last blog post for the trip. Mahalo to Coach Tino for your coaching and guidance, the Klasks (great chaperones), our Pilipa’a parents who helped make this trip possible for your daughters and most of all to our Pilipa’a girls.
